Energy Efficiency in Your Contemporary Kitchen Design
When it’s time to design your dream kitchen, there are numerous ways that you can go green to help the environment.
Energy-Efficient Kitchen Lighting
One way is through your choice of kitchen lighting fixtures. When you choose ENERGY STAR lighting, the quality of light is guaranteed to be as good as or better than light cast by traditional lighting (and you don’t have to sacrifice on style, either). When the government gives ENERGY STAR lighting options their seal of approval, they recognize that kitchen lighting needs to be inviting as well as functional, “properly displaying the natural colors of foods, and providing you with the work light you need.”
As examples, energy-efficient under-cabinet lighting tends to use thin-diameter fluorescent tubes that use only about one fourth of the electricity of halogen or incandescent bulbs. Besides being more environmentally friendly, these energy-efficient bulbs tend to last much longer.
We can install that type of lighting, as well as ENERGY STAR qualified recessed ceiling lighting and build them into spaces above cabinets and other locations that provide the look you want with excellent energy efficiency.
Energy-Efficient Kitchen Appliances
If you don’t already have them, then getting ENERGY STAR rated kitchen appliances is a great addition to your overall kitchen remodel or build. Appliances that have this rating help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants. They must meet several criteria, including:
- Significant energy savings
- Having features and performance demanded by consumers
- Technologies that are broadly available to multiple manufacturers
Other Factors to Consider in Your Modern Kitchen Design
Other ways to go green:
- Use FSC-certified plantation timber, or recycled/reclaimed timber, avoiding the use of virgin rainforest timber
- Choosing water appliances with ratings of AAA or the equivalent, picking the one with the maximum star rating
- Use organic products in your kitchen, from coasters to teas, and from mugs to cutting boards
